BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION     QUESTIONS FOR Scrafitto

   

Please feel free to limit your book club questions and use those that     may seem meaningful to your book club.

   

 

   

Do you understand the significance of the title?  What does     Scrafitto mean?  How does the title fit a theme(s) in the novel?

   

Location, location, location. Did you believe the descriptions of the     main location? Did the town of Quepos seem real?

   

What is the significance of edged objects in the novel?

   

Why doesn’t Mitch want to get involved?  What do you see as the     “tipping point” that draws him in?

   

What do you think is the significance of the protagonist’s name?

   

Why were the local police reluctant to investigate these crimes?      Did you get an awareness of any woman’s rights issues in a Latin American     country?

   

How do the photography references reflect Mitch’s approach to life?

   

Did you notice there was no curse words in the novel?  Did you miss     them? Would it have been a better book with characters using expletives and     swearing?

   

This story was written by a former CSI. Was there enough description of     the crime scenes and CSI techniques in the story?

   

There is little overt sex in the novel, yet there is romance. Would it     have been a better novel with more sex, more romance?

   

What are the main clues to the solution of the mystery? Where there any     apparent “red herrings”?

   

Was Paco guilty of his crimes?

   

Did you notice any religious references?   Where these     distracting or enriching?

   

Who was your favorite character? Mitch, Angie, Alan, Monte, or     Maria?  Were they fleshed out enough so that you grew to knew them?

   

Costa Rica is an environment conservation country, did that come across     in the novel? Did social issues or environment play a part in the story?

Did you learn some things about expats in a foreign country? About an     expatriate art community?

   

What part did Mitch’s former life play in his motivations?

   

Who was the woman in the restaurant that revealed her attack?

   

What was the monkey’s name that came to live with Mitch?  Were     there too many monkey references in the story?
